Frequently asked questions
Our Plans
How do I sign up for a specific plan?
Sign up, then hover over your name in the top right corner, and click on ”Settings & Account”. Select ”Billing & Plan” from the menu on the left side, and you will arrive on a page where you can select any of our available plans.
You can also write to support@datawrapper.de. We’re happy to create an account or upgrade a plan for you.
Why do you offer such a strong Free plan?
Our Free plan enables you to create, publish, embed, and export Datawrapper visualizations as PNGs without limits. We offer such a strong free plan because we know that many of our current users and customers find out about Datawrapper through workshops, university classes, or by trying out the tool after seeing an embedded chart online. We want to make it as easy as possible to do that.
But we understand that relying on a service you don’t pay for can feel odd: there must be a downside, no? We promise: there is not. Even on the free plan, we guarantee:
- We won’t sell your data. Some companies turn the user into the product, but that is not our business model. All data you upload to Datawrapper is kept confidential and only belongs to your account.
- We won’t track your readers. Your embedded charts will not contain any code that tracks you or your readers. We’ve never done that, and we’ll never do that, regardless of your plan.
- Your charts are private. You decide when it’s time to share your charts with the world. Until you click “Publish”, your charts are visible only to you and your team.
- Published charts will stay online indefinitely. We will never delete or disable any of your Datawrapper visualizations that you’ve embedded somewhere. We stand by our pledge to keep all our users’ charts online.
Do you offer a discount for non-profit organizations?
NGOs happily use our tool, and of course we recognize the financial constraints that such organizations are under. We gladly offer a 20% discount on annual and monthly Custom plans. Get in touch with us at support@datawrapper.de and we’ll set your account up.
Do you offer a discount for teaching or academic research?
We think it’s great when educators want to use Datawrapper as a teaching tool – and we know that academic researchers like using Datawrapper, too. Our powerful Free plan offers unlimited publishing of charts, maps and tables as well as collaboration: As a teacher, for example, you’ll be able to organize the charts of students in teams & shared folders according to topics, classes, or however you see fit. The Free plan also offers PNG export, but we understand that this might be not enough for you. We offer free PDF and SVG export for students, teachers, and academic researchers. Get in touch with support@datawrapper.de to ask us to set this up.
Are prices inclusive or exclusive of VAT?
All prices quoted are exclusive of VAT. Services are provided by Datawrapper GmbH, a limited liability corporation based in Berlin, Germany. Depending on your locality and tax status, additional VAT might be charged.
How can I pay for my plan?
We offer payment via credit card for all plans and billing schedules. For annual plans, payment via invoice/bank transfer is also possible. If you have more questions about ways of payment, reach out to support@datawrapper.de
How can I cancel my paid subscriptions?
You can cancel at any time. Simply email support@datawrapper.de and we’ll take care of it. Once cancelled, your account reverts back to our Free plan. Your existing published charts stay online.
Can I use my charts, maps, and tables in a commercial product or printed publication?
Yes, you have full copyright over charts and maps you create with Datawrapper, so you can publish them freely in academic or commercial contexts. If you are on our Free plan, the only thing we ask is that you retain the “Created with Datawrapper” attribution at the bottom of your chart or in your citations. Beyond that credit, there are no other conditions to using visualizations created with Datawrapper in publications.
Is there a limit to how many people can view my graphics online?
No. We limited chart views for free users a while ago, but changed that in December 2019. You can create and publish as many graphics as you want with any Datawrapper account, no matter how many people see them.
Customization
Can I use custom fonts in my charts?
Yes. If you’re using the Custom or Enterprise plan, Datawrapper will provide a fully customized design theme for you, which includes your own fonts. You can either send the font files to us and have them hosted on our infrastructure, or you can send us links and we’ll load them from your site. We can also work with platforms such as TypeKit and load the fonts from there.
What does the custom theme entail and what do you need from me?
If you choose a plan with a design theme (e.g., the Custom plan), all charts, maps, and tables can be fully customized to fit your organization’s style guide. That can mean a change in font family, size, and color; in background color and the color palette of all charts; extra borders or padding; or adding a logo. For example, The Times asked us to add a black line on the top of their charts, De Tijd wanted a logo, and both of them requested a change in background color and custom typefaces. To customize your charts, please send us your style guide at support@datawrapper.de. We can work with all kinds of different formats, so just send us whatever you think gives the best indication of what you’re looking for. At a minimum, we recommend you include the following:
- Font family, size, and color for the headline, description, chart and footer
- Color palette (a primary color and list of colors that suit your brand)
- Logo (if you’d like to include it in the chart)
Once we’ve received your style guide, we’ll create an initial version of that design in your Datawrapper account. We’ll fine-tune the design with you to make sure everything fits.
How can I remove the “Created with Datawrapper” attribution at the bottom of the chart?
The Datawrapper attribution appears if you use our Free plan. It allows your readers to discover how they too might be able to make similar charts. We want to democratize data visualization and enable content creators to tell their data-driven stories without needing special skills or lots of money, which is why we offer such an extensive free plan — and why the attribution remains important. To remove it, you’ll need to upgrade to a Custom or Enterprise plan.
Integration & technical guides
Who can see my visualizations before I publish them?
Nobody but you can see your visualizations before you publish them. Datawrapper visualizations are private by default until you hit “publish”. You can create as many charts, maps, and tables as you like without publishing a single one.
Are embedded Datawrapper visualizations GDPR compliant?
Datawrapper does not perform any tracking, user-profiling, advertising or data brokering through the Datawrapper visualizations you embed. All our embeds are Do Not Track (DNT) by default. Datawrapper embeds do not set any cookies or other identifiers.
By technical necessity, Datawrapper processes – but not stores – the end user’s IP address when viewing a visualization, as any website does. In accordance with privacy authorities, this is covered as a direct technical requirement to access and does not require dedicated consent.
What happens to my visualizations if I cancel my plan or close my account?
We’d be sorry to see you go (let us know your reasons so that we can improve our app!), but you don’t need to worry about your creations: Even if you discontinue your subscription, all your visualizations will stay online forever and remain visible to your readers.
What happens to my visualizations in case Datawrapper should close one day?
First of all, we’re not planning to shut down or sell the company. We’re alive and well and we’re excited about the future. But you never know. If at some point we can’t host your visualizations anymore, we will make it easy for you to download all your charts, maps, and tables from Datawrapper, to give you the option to host them yourself. Find more information on our Blog.
About Datawrapper
Who is behind Datawrapper?
Datawrapper is created by a team of designers, developers and journalists who worked in companies like the New York Times, NPR, Deutsche Welle, Bloomberg and ZEIT Online.
The company behind the tool is called Datawrapper GmbH, a German startup owned by Mirko Lorenz, Gregor Aisch, and David Kokkelink. We’re self-funded by our customers’ subscription revenue. Our main office is in Berlin (Friedrichshain), so if you’re in town, come say hi!
Which kind of visualizations can I create with Datawrapper?
You can create over 20 different chart types, three map types, and very flexible tables with Datawrapper. The best way to explore them is to simply try it out: Create a chart or a map now – no need to sign up. Or you can visit our River, which features hundreds of visualizations that other Datawrapper users built and which you can reuse. We also include our own charts in almost all our blog posts, especially in our Weekly Charts.
I want to show my data with a specific visualization type that you don’t offer. Why don’t you offer it?
It takes a lot of energy and time to build and maintain well-designed visualization types. We have some exciting new ones in our pipeline, but they will be added slowly. Basically, we’re always trying to answer the question: What will be most useful for most users? Our current chart and map types won’t be the best fit for all kinds of data – but we hope they will be the best fit for most.
Do write to us if you think that a specific visualization type might be useful for lots of users and use cases.
I have a question that isn’t answered here.
You can always contact us or write to support@datawrapper.de and we’ll be happy to answer all the questions you might have (about Datawrapper, that is).
